Herbert George Wells Essays (990 words) - The War Of The Worlds
Herbert George Wells One of the most prolific writers of his time, H.G. ( Herbert George) Wells was able to do it all. He was universal, and could write from many different sides. He was one of the most versitile writers, as he could write like a novelist, as in the The History of Mr. Polly. He could also write short stories, like The Star, or The Door In The Wall. He was also considered to be a visionary and a dreamer, as shown throughout A Modern Utopia, and Men Like Gods. What Wells was most famous for was his ability to be a scientific romancer. His novels, The Time Machine, The War of The Worlds, and The Invisible Man, were what he became most widely known for. All his writings, in the different genere's they were written from, truly prove he was one of the most versitile writers that ever lived. The date was September 21, 1866, and the place was 47 (now renumbered 172) High Street, Bromley, Kent, a suburb of London.. His father, Joseph Wells, and his mother, Sarah, had been married in 1853 and they had four children. An elder sister, Fanny, had died at the age of 9 two years before H.G. was born. After he was born, his family was worried that he may also die like his sister Fanny, being that he was a sort of "weakling" and struggled to not get sick most of the time. His father was a shopkeeper and a professional cricketer, and his mother served from time to time as a housekeeper at the nearby estate of Uppark. His father's business failed and the family never made it to middle-class status, so Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper, spending the years between 1880 and 1883 inWindsor and Southsea as a drapeist. In 1883 Wells became a teacher/pupil at Midhurst Grammar Scool. He obtained a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London and studied there biology under T.H. Huxley. However, his interest faltered and in 1887 he left without a degree. He taught in private schools for four years, not taking his B.S. degree until 1890. Next year he settled in London, married his cousin Isabel and continued his career as a teacher in a correspondence college. From 1893 Wells became a full-time writer. After some years Wells left Isabel for one of his brightest students, Amy Catherine, whom he married in 1895. Wells began to write fantasy fiction because he wanted to make money, and to get on with his writing career. He decided to write in this genere because he thought, and was right, that there was a large amount of people looking for spine chilling stories and the unexplained. Also, Wells knew of some of the early tales of the unexplained and far fetched: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and The Last Man, and also works of Edgar Allan Poe, all which he enjoyed profousely. Wells made his debut with The Time Machine, where the Time Traveler lands in the year 802701 and finds two people: the Eloi, weak and little, happy during the day, scared at night, who live above ground, and the Morlocks, apelike and carnivorous creatures that live below ground. Much of the realism of the story was achieved by carefully studied technical details. The Time Machine was a great success, and is the first of hundred's of writings Well's produced. The Island Of Doctor Moreau (1896) is the most horrifying of Wells's fantasies and one of the best written. The doctor is seeking to make animals half human by means of vivisectional surgery, the transplatation of organs, and the pain involved is very vividly described. Doctor Moreau suceede's in making some of his man-animals talk and even read, but they tend to revert to the beast, so Moreau continues to try to get all the animal out, and make a creature of his own. Moreau is then killed by his creatures, which continue to come to their demise, and finally all die off. When the H.M.S. Scorpion visits the island, there is nothing alive there except for a few "white moths, some hogs and rabbits and some rather peculiar rats." In the same year as his gorey fantasy The Island Of Doctor Moreau, he also published the light and cheerful novel The Wheels of Chance: A holiday Adventure. Its use has increased tremendously over the last decade. It is used in many different places and seems to be replacing the traditional methods of obtaining energy at an astounding rate. It’s really no wonder why we would embrace the concept of Solar Energy. There are various ways this energy is used and even more way in which it has benefited today’s society. Solar energy stands alone in its own class of sun powered energy. However, there are many diverse way as to how it can be used. Solar energy is the cleanest power generating systems today. It is not harsh on our environment making it a safe and wise choice. There is no pollution, noise, or hazardous waste as a result of this conversion of the sun’s energy. The electricity created is clean, reliable, and renewable. The use of Solar Energy also decreases our dependence on fossil fuel and other energy sources much less friendly on our environment by reducing greenhouse gases. Solar power systems are cost efficient and provide it’s users with fixed energy costs. As the use for this â€Å"clean energy†increases so does the development opportunities and local jobs. The use of heat and light simultaneously obtained from the sun is a brilliant and beneficial asset to us on many different levels. Solar energy has propelled our economy and has driven us further into the future. It’s no wonder why we are relying more and more on this type of energy. How we use Solar Energy In order to utilize the sun’s energy, there must be some type of conversion for channeling. This device is called Photovoltaic (PV devices). It can also be referred to as â€Å"solar cells†which transform sunlight into direct electricity. These PV cells are individually grouped into sections which are used in a vast array of applications sometimes ranging from small single cells that are capable of charging small watches, to larger, more complex systems that are capable of powering homes and even expanding to power plants that may cover many acres of land. Photovoltaic is a method used to generate electricity through solar radiation while transforming direct electricity by using semiconductors which display photovoltaic effect. This power generation uses solar powered panels consisting of numerous solar cells of photovoltaic material. There are several materials used to make photovoltaics including copper indium gallium, polycrystalline silicon, cadmium telluride, m onocrystalline silicon, and selenide/sulfide. As the demand for renewable energy increases, the development of photovoltaic systems and solar cells made astounding advancement over the past few years. Photovoltaic systems or PV’s rely on solar panels in order to change light from the sun into usable electricity. â€Å"This system is made up of one or more photovoltaic (PV) panels, a DC/AC power converter (also known as an inverter), a racking system that holds the solar panels, electrical interconnections, and mounting for other components. Optionally it may include a maximum power point tracker (MPPT), battery system and charger, solar tracker, energy management software, solar concentrators or other equipment†. A compact PV system would provide enough energy for one consumer, or even to an isolated device similar to a small weather instrument of lamp. Larger PV systems connected on a grid can provide enough energy for a large number of consumers. This electricity can be used directly, stored, combined with other generators fed through a small grid (called a hybrid plant), can be either stored, used directly (island/standalone plant), or fed into a large electricity grid powered by central plants. These systems are specifically designed to guarantee that the best (highest) energy yield for a given investment in obtained. Basic emotions can be recognized by the brain regardless of cultural differences, as was shown by a study done by Paul Ekman (in Shreeve 2005). The amygdala in our brain receives the sensory responses from environments that trigger fear responses and reaction to dangers, which, in turn, processes the stimuli, setting the less urgent information aside. How to Describe Yourself Essay You could ask a hundred people to describe themselves and what they like least and most about themselves, and I bet you would get the same answer every time. People would say they are caring, sweet, loving, forgiving, nice, and respectful. The thing is though not everyone is what they say they are. Some people say they are forgiving but the still hold grudges and other may say they are truthful but tell that one white lie. So how can I describe myself to you? I would have to start with being honest about who I really am. I would describe myself as being honest, caring, loving, nurturing, forgiving, and a lot of other things. But I am not completely honest or completely loving or forgiving, no human being is. I tell that one white lie every now and again like: no that top looks great on you, or no you don’t look fat in those jeans. And to say that I am completely loving is not true either. There are some things I hate in life such as: tomatoes, bad hair days, and snow. Finally to say that I am forgiving would be a lie, I hold grudges longer than most people, and if you cross that certain line there’s no coming back and there is no forgiveness for you. So to say I am completely truthful, loving or forgiving would be a lie in itself. The qualities I would like to see flourish and whither about myself are the same qualities everyone has. I would like to see my bad habits of biting nails, or eating when I’m bored to wither away. But some of my best qualities I would like to see grow and expand are, being caring, putting others before myself, or helping someone in need whether my needs are more important or not. This entire thing comes back to what I describe myself as and how I really am. Some qualities about myself I want gone in a second but others I wouldn’t trade for the world. It all depends on how you view yourself. The qualities I like about myself the most are the fact that I can overlook whatever a person has done in their life and still see the good in them that’s trying to break free. Also no matter when or where if someone needs help and I know I can help them I will do it no matter what the cost. On the other hand the qualities I don’t like about myself are just like everyone else’s. I don’t like that fact that I have low self-esteem, or that I don’t have the same characteristics of other people. Also I don’t like that I sometimes judge a person just by looking at them and then I have my mind made up. But these are the qualities that make us human. Over all everyone has a good and bad quality about themself, no matter what race, religion, ethnic background ,everyone has something in common and that is the thing that makes us unique and separates us from each other. I wouldn’t trade any of my best characteristics or my good qualities. I would however change some of my bad qualities, or at least try to improve them. I as a human being have my ups and downs and have my flaws but that’s what makes me so special and so unique. So asking me to describe myself as a human being is really a trick question because it’s all a matter of my own opinion mixed with how the world sees me.
